The week isn’t over but what a week it’s been. I thought I’d give you an inside look into a week in the life of a sports agent. While this was busier than most weeks, here’s a snapshot of what goes into representing NFL players.
The week started Sunday morning at my cabin in Shaver Lake, Calif., where I met with a social media/marketing expert to create a digital media strategy and marketing plan for the summer. After that I drive five hours to our home in Redondo Beach.
On Tuesday morning I flew to Tempe to meet with players from Arizona State. The ASU compliance office hosts an “Athlete Agent Day”, which I like to call speed dating for an agent. Only agents registered with the state of Arizona and the ASU compliance office get invited. It’s an interesting process in which each agent gets no more than 15 minutes to meet with student-athletes. I met with seven players in a three hour period. It was a good introduction and for me to share my core values and vision with those who may need representation for the 2017 NFL Draft or free agency. First impressions are important for me. I like to get to know the players and see if we would work well together.
I flew back on Tuesday afternoon in time for a dinner party with my fellow USC coaching wives. My husband, John Baxter, is the special teams and tight ends coach for the Trojans.
On Wednesday and Thursday the NFL hosted its “Rookie Premier” event. As a by-product of that the NFLPA works with trading card and apparel companies to meet with players and agents. Some of the trading card companies shot their rookie photos at the Los Angeles Coliseum. I met with NIKE and others to promote my NFL guys. When you have been this as long as I have, more than 20 years, you make great friends in the various NFL industries. It was good to reconnect and network. I attended the NIKE NFL jersey reveal.
Oh, and by the way, I’m still getting settled and moved into our new home after spending the last couple months selling our home, packing and moving from Ann Arbor. We are thrilled to relocate back in Southern California.
What a week!
My core values are: protection, advocacy and trust. An agent’s role is to protect and be an advocate for their clients. If you are looking for representation, contact me.
